✦ BUDGET & SCOPE

Shopify Website Design Cost: What Changes the Quote?

A useful way to budget a Shopify website is to compare the deliverables, existing setup, content and custom features—not just one advertised starting price.

Why two Shopify website quotes can be very different

“Shopify website design” can mean configuring a ready-made theme for a small catalog, developing custom page sections, rebuilding an existing storefront, or designing several content-led pages around a new brand. Before comparing prices, ask each provider to describe the exact work being quoted.

1. Define the pages and templates

List the homepage, product and collection templates, About, Contact, FAQ, policies, campaign landing pages and any account-related pages. One flexible product template may serve many products; several unique product layouts require additional design and testing.

2. Separate theme configuration from custom development

A licensed theme may already support filters, badges, menus and content blocks. A custom sticky purchase panel, comparison table, subscription interface or complex variant selector can require Liquid, JavaScript and app integration. Ask which components remain editable in Shopify’s Theme Editor after handover.

3. Decide who supplies content and imagery

Writing copy, resizing images, organizing products and creating visual assets takes time. A quotation should state whether those tasks belong to the client or the designer. A screenshot used as a visual reference is not a substitute for production-ready assets.

4. Include testing, revisions and launch

Confirm how many revision rounds are included, whether desktop and mobile layouts are checked, and who handles publishing and rollback. Changes involving domains, shipping, payments or paid apps should be documented separately.

5. Compare total ongoing costs

The design quote may not include Shopify subscription charges, premium themes, fonts, paid apps, translation services or ongoing maintenance. Ask about those costs early so the project budget reflects the full setup.
