Start with the problem, not the theme
Write down what is difficult about the current store: unclear navigation, inconsistent page layouts, hard-to-edit content, or a product page that leaves common questions unanswered. A specific problem makes a useful design brief.
Make a page and content inventory
List your home, collection, product, about, contact, and policy pages. Note which content should stay, which needs rewriting, and which images need replacing. Keep a record of existing URLs when planning changes.
Prioritize the shopping journey
Walk through finding a product, choosing its options, adding it to the cart, and proceeding to checkout. Review the same journey on a phone. Give the essential steps priority over decorative additions.
Agree the scope and handover
Define what will be designed, what will be built, who supplies content, and how revisions are handled. Ask for a handover that shows you how to update the everyday parts of your store.
