Clone a Shopify Website: What Can You Recreate?

A practical guide to requesting a Shopify website recreation while protecting your brand, theme licenses and the original creator’s assets.

First, define what “clone” means

People use phrases such as “clone Shopify store,” “copy Shopify website,” and “duplicate Shopify website” for different projects. You might be moving a store you own, reproducing a layout using new branding, or recreating features you saw on another site. The best approach depends on access, permissions and expected functionality.

Scenario A: You own the original website

Confirm who owns the store, theme license, product data and media. If you want a second storefront, document which data and settings need to move and which should remain separate. Shopify subscriptions and third-party apps may impose additional licensing or configuration requirements.

Scenario B: Another site is your visual reference

A reference can inform navigation, section order, spacing, typography treatment and interface behavior. It does not automatically grant rights to reuse logos, photographs, product descriptions, paid theme source files or private code. Plan an original build with your own content and appropriately licensed assets.

Don't rely on screenshots alone

Show the interactions you want to reproduce: responsive menus, product options, comparison sections, sliders, sticky calls to action, subscriptions, bundle choices and cart behavior. Each can require different Shopify settings, apps or custom development.

Prepare a page-by-page checklist

Agree what success looks like

Describe the elements that must match the reference closely, the elements that should reflect your own brand, and features that can reasonably differ. The scope should also identify what remains editable in the Shopify Theme Editor and what the client will maintain after handover.

To scope an authorized recreation, review reference-based Shopify website design and submit your URLs and requirements.
